Weed Delivery in Morgan Hill: Zones, ETAs and How It Works

Purple Lotus delivers cannabis to Morgan Hill seven days a week, 9 AM to 10 PM, from two licensed San Jose dispensaries, on same-day windows of 1 to 2 hours that you choose at checkout. Orders carry a $50 minimum and a flat $3.99 delivery fee, and the same service reaches San Martin, Madrone and the southern edge of San Jose. All you need at the door is a valid 21+ ID that matches the name on the order.

Morgan Hill has no cannabis storefront and is not getting one soon. That is not a gap in the market; it is a decision the city made, and it is the reason delivery is how Morgan Hill buys.

Why there is no dispensary in Morgan Hill

California leaves the question of cannabis storefronts to each city. Morgan Hill's council took it up in April 2021, when a motion to create a locally controlled permitting program for commercial cannabis failed by a 3 to 2 vote. The Morgan Hill Times summarised the outcome in one line: the city's prohibition of cannabis commerce would continue for the foreseeable future. Nothing has changed it since.

What a city cannot do is stop licensed delivery. State law lets a licensed retailer deliver anywhere in California, including into cities that ban storefronts, and the Department of Cannabis Control's own guide to where cannabis businesses are allowed sets out the split between local storefront rules and statewide delivery rights. Morgan Hill even collects tax on deliveries made into the city; the city manager said as much at the 2021 meeting.

So the position for anyone in Morgan Hill is simple. There is no shop to walk into, and there does not need to be. A licensed retailer 25 miles up the 101 delivers to your door.

How long it takes

Morgan Hill is about 25 miles south of the Commercial Street store, most of it on the 101. That distance is why the city is served by scheduled windows rather than by Lotus NOW, which is the priority service for San Jose addresses.

You pick a 1 to 2 hour window at checkout, and the driver is routed to it. Afternoon windows are the most reliable. Evening windows fill first, particularly Friday and Saturday, and the last hour before the 10 PM close is the busiest of the day. The last same-day orders are taken at 9 PM; anything after that is scheduled for the next morning from 9 AM.

The stretch of the 101 between Blossom Hill Road and Cochrane Road is the variable. In the late afternoon commute it can add 20 minutes to a run, which is one more reason a midday window is the smart choice on a weekday. Our guide to how fast delivery really is covers the same factors for San Jose.

Prices on the menu are before tax. Cannabis in California carries state excise and sales tax at checkout, and the total you see before you confirm is the total the driver collects.

What you need at the door

The person who placed the order has to be there, with a government-issued photo ID showing they are 21 or older, and the name on the ID has to match the name on the order. Drivers cannot hand an order to a housemate, a partner or a neighbor, however reasonable the request. It is a licensing condition, not a store policy.

Deliveries arrive in unmarked vehicles. The driver will not leave a package unattended, so if the window is inconvenient, change it before the driver is dispatched rather than after.

For gated communities and hillside addresses, put the gate code and any landmark in the order notes. Two minutes at a callbox is the most common delay on a Morgan Hill run.

Where a delivery can legally go

The destination rules are set by the state, not by the retailer. A driver may only deliver to a physical address in California, so a meeting point, a car park or a street corner is not an option. The delivery regulations spell the rest out.

Two limits catch people out. A delivery cannot go to an address on publicly owned land, or to any address in a building leased by a public agency, which rules out city buildings, most parks and many campus addresses. It also cannot go to a school teaching kindergarten through grade 12, a day care center or a youth center. City offices and county library branches are public buildings, so neither works as a delivery address. In practice that means home, or work if work is not a public building.

The vehicle rules come from the same place. Cannabis travels in an enclosed vehicle with nothing on the outside to suggest what is inside, and only the retailer’s own employee is allowed in it. That is why the car at your door looks like every other car on the street.

What the driver records

Every delivery produces a delivery request receipt, and the state sets out what has to be on it: the retailer’s legal name and license number, the first name and employee number of the person who prepared the order and of the driver who brought it, your first name and a customer number, the date and time of the request, the delivery address, an itemized description of the order and the total paid.

That is the paperwork reason the name on the order has to match the ID at the door. The receipt ties one order to one customer, and the driver cannot reassign it on the doorstep.

Daily purchase limits, exactly

California sets daily limits per customer, and they apply to delivery exactly as they apply in the store. An adult-use customer can buy 28.5 grams of non-concentrated cannabis, 8 grams of cannabis concentrate and 6 immature plants in one day. The 8 gram concentrate limit counts the concentrate inside edibles and vape cartridges, not only the concentrate bought as concentrate, which is the part most people miss.

A medicinal patient with a valid physician’s recommendation can buy 8 ounces of dried flower and 12 immature plants, or the amount the recommendation specifies where that differs. The two sets of limits cannot be added together. Our guide to purchase limits works through the arithmetic with examples.

What you can order

The delivery menu is the store menu: more than 1,000 lab-tested products across flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles, drinks, concentrates and topicals. Brands include STIIIZY, Raw Garden, Jeeter, Wyld, Camino, Heavy Hitters, PlugPlay and Blue Chip, the house flower grown in San Jose. The full menu shows live stock, and the deals page carries the day's discounts.

Ordering for the weekend

Friday evening is the busiest delivery window of the week in every city we serve, and Morgan Hill is at the far end of the route. Order on Thursday, or on Friday before lunch, and take a daytime window. A Saturday morning order for an afternoon window is nearly always on time.

For a group, one order on one ID is simpler than several. California's daily purchase limits apply per person, so a large order is split across the people receiving it; our purchase limits guide explains the numbers.

A little about Morgan Hill

Morgan Hill is the last city on the 101 before the road drops into the Gilroy flats, home to about 45,000 people and a downtown along Monterey Road that has more restaurants per block than most South Bay cities twice its size. Anderson Lake County Park sits above the east side of town, the Coyote Creek Trail runs north from it toward San Jose, and Guglielmo Winery, founded in 1925, is still family-run on the edge of town. Memorial Day weekend brings the Mushroom Mardi Gras to downtown.

It is also a commuter city. A large share of residents drive north into San Jose every weekday, which is why a delivery window that lands in the evening, at home, is the whole appeal.

Delivery, or the drive to San Jose?

The Commercial Street store is about 25 miles north, 35 to 45 minutes without traffic and well over an hour at 5 PM. Both stores are open 8 AM to 10 PM for pickup, and pickup makes sense if you are already in San Jose for work or a game. If you are at home in Morgan Hill, the drive costs more than the $3.99 delivery fee in fuel alone. Order the window instead.
