How cannabis delivery works in California

Every legal cannabis delivery in California runs on the same regulatory frame, whether it comes from us or anyone else.

Deliveries must originate from a licensed retailer. The driver has to be an employee of that licensed retailer, at least 21, and carrying a copy of the license. They cannot deliver to a public place, a school, or anywhere on federal land. Every order is tracked in the state's track-and-trace system from shelf to doorstep.

There are also hard limits on what a driver can carry and what you can buy in a day. Adult-use customers can purchase up to 28.5 grams of flower, 8 grams of concentrate, and 6 immature plants per day. These are per-customer, per-day limits set by the state, not store policy.

The practical upshot: legal delivery has more steps than an app that brings you dinner, and those steps are the reason it is legal. Anyone offering to skip them is not operating legally, and that is your risk as much as theirs.

How long it takes

Two services, two different answers.

Three things move your delivery time more than anything else:

Time of day. Early afternoon is consistently the fastest window. Evenings, especially Friday and Saturday, carry the most volume.

Distance from the dispatching store. Central San Jose is quickest. The southern and eastern edges add time, and cities outside San Jose are on standard delivery rather than priority.

Whether your cart is in stock at one store. If items have to come from both locations, that adds a leg to the run.

Hours and cutoffs

The number that actually matters is how late you can still get a same-day window — and the honest answer is that the last windows before the 10 PM close go fast. If speed matters, order earlier in the day.

Store and delivery hours are 8 AM to 10 PM, every day of the year — including holidays. For a same-day delivery, order inside those hours; the final delivery windows of the evening fill first, so the earlier you order, the more windows you'll see at checkout.

What you need: ID, age and payment

This is where most first deliveries hit friction, so it is worth reading before you order.

Age. You must be 21 or older for adult-use. Medical patients aged 18 to 20 can order with a valid physician's recommendation and a state-issued MMIC.

ID. A valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID. Driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID all work. Expired does not, regardless of how recently it expired.

The name has to match. The name on your ID must match the name on the order. Drivers cannot hand an order to a roommate, a partner, or a family member, even one standing right there. If you are ordering for a household, the person receiving it has to be the person who placed it.

Someone 21+ has to be present. We cannot leave cannabis at a door, in a lobby, with a concierge, or with a neighbor. This is not a policy we can flex on.

Payment. We accept debit cards (PIN required) in-store and on delivery, cash, and Treez Pay — a contactless ACH option with a flat $5 convenience fee.

Address details matter. Gate codes, building entrances, and unit numbers are the most common cause of a delayed handoff. Add them in the delivery notes at checkout and you will save yourself the phone call.

Fees and minimums

Delivery orders carry a $50 minimum and a flat $3.99 delivery fee. Both show at checkout before you confirm, and between rewards, bundle deals, and daily discounts, hitting the minimum is rarely the hard part.

On taxes: California cannabis carries state excise tax plus local tax, and prices at checkout should be what you actually pay. Worth noting that our STIIIZY pods are priced at $30 flat with tax included, so the shelf price is the real price.

Is delivery legal where you are?

Yes, cannabis delivery is legal throughout California, including in cities that do not allow physical dispensaries. State law permits licensed delivery to any jurisdiction in California.

That last part surprises people. A city can decline to permit a storefront within its limits and still receive legal deliveries from a licensed retailer elsewhere. It is the reason our footprint covers cities with no dispensary of their own.

Local rules can affect delivery hours in some jurisdictions. If you are outside San Jose and timing matters, checking at checkout is the reliable move.

Ordering direct vs ordering through an app

Most people's first experience of cannabis delivery is through a marketplace app. It is worth understanding what is actually happening when you do that, because it explains a lot about pricing and timing.

A marketplace does not hold inventory or employ drivers. It lists menus from dispensaries in your area and routes your order to one of them. The store fulfils it. The marketplace takes a cut.

That model has a real advantage: you see several stores at once. It also has consequences. The menu you are looking at may not be perfectly in sync with what is actually on the shelf. The platform cannot commit to a delivery time, because it does not control the driver. And the fee structure has an extra party in it.

Ordering direct from a dispensary means the menu is the store's live inventory, the driver is the store's employee, and the delivery time is something the store can actually stand behind. That is why we can publish 45 minutes as a floor and a 45 to 90 minute typical range rather than an unspecified "same day."

Neither approach is wrong. If you want to compare five stores at once, a marketplace does that well. If you want the fastest and most accurate version of one store's menu, order direct.

What actually happens on your first delivery

Worth knowing so nothing catches you out.

You place the order. Address first, then menu, then checkout. If you are new, this is where you upload or present ID for a one-time verification.

The store confirms and packs it. Everything is scanned into California's track-and-trace system. This is quick but it is not skippable.

A driver is assigned. For Lotus NOW, this happens immediately rather than waiting for a batch to fill.

You get a tracking link. From this point you can see where the driver is.

The driver arrives and checks your ID. They will look at the ID, confirm the name matches the order, and confirm you are 21 or older. This takes under a minute if you have it in hand.

You sign and take the order. Done.

The most common friction points, in order: an expired ID, an ID whose name does not match the order, nobody 21+ present to receive it, and a gate or building entrance the driver cannot get through. All four are avoidable, and three of them are avoidable before you even check out.

A note on where you receive it

Deliveries go to a private residence or a private address. Drivers cannot deliver to a public place, which includes parks, sidewalks, parking lots, schools, and anywhere on federal land. That last category catches more of the Bay Area than people expect, since federal land includes national parks and certain federal facilities.

If you are staying somewhere temporarily, a hotel or a short-term rental, delivery is generally possible to the room or unit rather than a lobby, but confirm the property allows it. Many do not.
