Day Trip Festival NorCal: Parking, Transit and What to Know
Day Trip Festival arrives at Discovery Meadow in downtown San Jose on Saturday October 17 and Sunday October 18, running 2 PM to 10 PM both days. It is an 18+ event and photo ID is required at the gate. This is the festival's first Northern California edition, which means most of the usual advice about it describes a different city.
Discovery Meadow sits at 180 Woz Way, on the southern edge of downtown by the Guadalupe River. That location is the single most useful thing to know: this is a downtown festival, not a fairground one, so the parking and transit that serve downtown serve it.

Who is playing
Twelve artists across the weekend, weighted toward house and tech house.
Saturday brings Gordo back to back with Vintage Culture, Eli Brown in the sunset slot, Wax Motif, SCRIPT, JLittle and Lefty.
Sunday has Cloonee, After Midnight (the Matroda and San Pacho project), plus Chris Lorenzo, Fallon, Eve Lauren and SAGE.
A 2 PM start with a 10 PM finish means the sunset slot is the centre of gravity on both days rather than a late headline set. If you are picking one arrival time, late afternoon is when it fills.
Getting there
This is the rare Bay Area festival where driving is the worst option. Discovery Meadow has no dedicated event parking, and downtown San Jose on a Saturday in October already has the Rush concert at SAP Center and, four blocks away, a separate street festival.
VTA light rail is the answer. The Children's Discovery Museum stop sits beside the venue, and downtown San Jose is the point where VTA's lines converge. A light-rail-only Excursion Pass costs $5 and is good for eight hours, which covers a 2 PM to 10 PM day. Buy it from the machine at any light rail station rather than assuming a day pass; the day pass is $7.50 and you do not need the bus coverage.
Caltrain and the rest of the region arrive at Diridon Station, which is about a 17-minute walk from the meadow, or one light rail stop. Check the last train home before you commit to it, because a 10 PM finish and a last train do not always agree.
Rideshare into downtown works, but expect the surge that a 10 PM festival exit produces. Walking a few blocks north before requesting a car is consistently faster than standing at the exit.
If you are driving anyway, the closest structured parking is the city lot at 180 Woz Way under Highway 87, which shares the meadow’s address and holds 267 cars, with the Almaden and Woz lot next along at 390 spaces. Both run a $7 flat fee normally and an event rate between $3 and $25. The Convention Center garage on West San Carlos Street is the big one at 1,140 spaces, with event flat rates up to $25 posted at the entrance. Do not leave a car overnight in festival parking; the organiser says it will be towed at your expense.
The one date conflict worth planning around
Saturday October 17 is the busiest downtown day of the month by a distance.
| What | Where | When |
|---|---|---|
| Day Trip Festival | Discovery Meadow | 2 PM to 10 PM |
| Rush, "Fifty Something" | SAP Center, 15 min walk away | 7:30 PM |
| A separate street festival | Plaza de César Chávez, 4 blocks away | Daytime |
Three events inside a mile, with the SAP Center show letting out while the festival is still running. Parking downtown on that Saturday is a genuinely bad plan, and transit is not merely the cheaper option but the faster one.
Sunday October 18 is calmer. If you have a choice of days and you care about the logistics more than the lineup, take the Sunday.
Entry, ID and the 18+ rule
The gate is 18+ and photo ID is required. That is worth stating plainly because it cuts both ways.
If you are 18 to 20, you can attend the festival. You cannot legally buy cannabis in California, which requires 21+ with valid ID and no exceptions. Nothing in this guide is an invitation to do otherwise.
VIP is 21+ only. If you are buying VIP, expect the ID check to be enforced separately at that gate.
Bring a real ID. Photocopies, photos on a phone and expired cards are refused at every event of this kind.
What counts as ID is narrower than people expect. A US driver licence or state ID works, as does a passport from any country. A foreign driving licence is only accepted alongside a colour photocopy of your passport, and temporary DMV paperwork needs either a passport or the expired licence with it. Digital IDs, school IDs, consular cards and photocopies on their own are all refused.
One catch for visitors: a foreign licence with a photocopy gets you through the gate but not a 21+ wristband, so buying a drink or entering VIP needs a physical passport or a US ID.
Doors work on a cutoff rather than a timed slot. Any unscanned ticket gets you in, but entry closes an hour before the end of the night, which is 9 PM here, and there is no re-entry on either day. Security is a full search: pockets emptied, bags opened, a pat-down, and shoes off if they ask.
What the gate will take off you
Bags are capped at 12 by 12 inches, and the festival wants small single-compartment bags, purses or fanny packs. A hydration pack passes with no more than two main compartments and one small one, and it has to arrive empty.
Chairs, blankets, tents and large umbrellas are all out, which matters on a lawn. A rain poncho is fine, and so is an umbrella measuring under 10 inches collapsed. Also refused: glass, cans, coolers, aerosols including spray sunscreen, eye drops, over-the-counter medicine, pacifiers, drones, laser pointers, LED gloves and any camera with a detachable lens.
Things that do get through and are worth having: a phone and a battery pack, earplugs, glowsticks, a selfie stick, a personal misting fan with an empty bottle, and prescription medicine as long as the prescription matches your ID. Cigarettes have to be sealed at entry, and a vape needs an empty chamber with at most one sealed bottle of liquid.
Accessibility, and one thing to check first
The festival publishes no accessibility information at all. There is no page on step-free routes, viewing platforms, accessible toilets or service animals, and no ADA drop-off is named. The contact form is the only route, and it does carry categories for accessibility and for communication requests, so ask early rather than on the day.
There is also a transit detail worth checking before you rely on it. VTA lists wheelchair boarding as unavailable at the Children’s Discovery Museum stop, the one beside the meadow, while Convention Center and Diridon both list it as available. If that matters to your trip, confirm it with VTA directly and plan to board at one of the other two.
Before you go, not at the venue
Two things this guide will not do.
Cannabis cannot be consumed at the festival. Public consumption is illegal in California under Proposition 64, and Discovery Meadow is a public park in the middle of a city. Every festival of this kind searches bags at the gate, and consumption on site is a straightforward way to be removed from an event you paid for.
The festival is blunter than most on this: it states a zero-tolerance policy for drug use and possession, and says narcotics laws will be enforced. Combined with a TSA-style search at the gate, that makes the answer simple. Whatever you have stays at home.
Nothing you buy from us goes to a festival with you. Deliveries go to a private address, handed to the person who placed the order, with ID checked at the door. That is how licensed delivery works in California and it does not bend for an event weekend.
If you want to sort something out for after the festival, or for a Sunday at home rather than a Saturday downtown, Purple Lotus delivers across San Jose seven days a week, and our downtown store on West Santa Clara Street is about an 11 minute walk from Discovery Meadow. Deliveries carry a $50 minimum and a $3.99 flat fee, and the person receiving the order needs valid ID showing 21+ with a name matching the order.
If you leave it late, Lotus NOW priority delivery reaches most of San Jose in as little as 45 minutes, with the typical order arriving in 45 to 90 minutes. On a Saturday with three events running downtown, ordering earlier in the day is the difference between a plan and a hope. The full menu is live inventory from both licensed stores, so what you see is what is actually on the shelf.
What downtown looks like that weekend
The meadow sits between the Convention Center and the Guadalupe River, which puts it within walking distance of most of what downtown has.
San Pedro Square Market, about 15 minutes north, is the reliable answer for a group with different tastes: fifteen-plus counters, no single kitchen bottleneck, open to 10 PM on Sunday and midnight on Saturday.
O'Flaherty's on North San Pedro Street runs to 2 AM every day of the year, which makes it one of the few genuinely post-festival options downtown.
The Brit on West Santa Clara Street stays open to 2 AM on Saturdays.
Poor House Bistro, closest to SAP Center, is worth knowing about for the Sunday and worth avoiding on Monday and Tuesday when it is closed.
The SAP Center guide has the full downtown list with walk times and closing days, and it applies here almost unchanged. The two venues are fifteen minutes apart and draw on the same restaurants.
A caution on the Saturday: everywhere downtown will be absorbing a Rush audience as well as a festival one. Booking somewhere for after is a better plan than walking out at 10 PM and hoping.
Why a downtown festival changes the calculation
Most large Bay Area festivals happen somewhere you have to drive to. This one does not, and that reverses the usual advice.
At a fairground event, driving is normal and transit is the compromise. At Discovery Meadow, the venue is surrounded by a working city centre with a light rail stop beside it and a mainline station a short walk away. The parking that exists is the parking downtown always has, shared that day with an arena show and a street festival.
The practical version: the people who drive to this will spend longer getting out of downtown at 10 PM than the people on the train will spend getting home.
October weather helps. Mid-October in San Jose is reliably dry and mild in the afternoon, cooling sharply after sunset. An outdoor festival that ends at 10 PM in October is a different proposition from the same festival in July, and the layers advice below is not decorative.
What to bring
Festival packing is mostly obvious. Three things specific to this one.
Layers. A 2 PM start in October is warm; a 10 PM finish beside a river is not. The temperature swing between those two points is the single most common thing people get wrong at an autumn outdoor event.
An empty water bottle. A reusable bottle is allowed through the gate only if it is empty, and sealed water counts as an outside beverage, so it is refused. The festival does not publish where you refill once inside, which is worth finding out at the gate rather than at 6 PM.
Something to cover your ears if you are near the front. Eight hours of sound at a house festival is a long exposure, and the people who do this regularly all carry them.
