A practical note on checking hours. Google Business Profile listings are the fastest source but they are self-reported, and holiday hours are the single least-maintained field in the whole listing. A shop that set its holiday hours once in 2023 will still be showing them. If a trip depends on somewhere being open, call.

San Jose Earthquakes — on the road this weekend. The Saturday September 5 match is away at Austin, so it is one to watch from a couch or a bar rather than a stadium trip. The next home match at PayPal Park is Saturday September 12 against Houston, the weekend after the holiday.

Kings Mountain Art Fair, Woodside (Sep 5–7) — juried artists showing under the coastal redwoods, about 45 minutes from San Jose, running all three days of the weekend. Admission and parking are free, with free shuttles from the parking areas along Skyline running 9:30 AM to 5 PM. One of the better day trips of the weekend if the heat is on.

Belmont Greek Festival (Sep 5–6) — the 54th year of it: food, pastries, live music and dancing, noon to 10 PM both days, $5 general admission at the entrance. Up the Peninsula, easy from the 101, and one of the better-value days out on the list.

Downtown San Jose itself is worth a mention. San Pedro Square Market, the SoFA district and Santana Row all stay open through the holiday, and the middle of a long weekend is when downtown is at its most relaxed. If the plan is simply to eat well and not drive far, that is the answer.

The long-weekend pattern worth knowing

A few things that are reliably true about this particular weekend in San Jose.

Saturday is the busy day. Everyone with a three-day weekend front-loads it. Roads, restaurants and shops are at their busiest.

Sunday afternoon is the calmest stretch of the three days by a distance. If there is one thing you actually want to do without queueing for it, put it there.

Monday is oddly quiet in the city — a lot of people leave town. If you have stayed, it is a genuinely good day to be in San Jose, and the places that stay open are noticeably less crowded.

The traffic out and back is the real event. Southbound on the Friday afternoon and northbound on the Monday afternoon are the two worst windows of the weekend on 101 and 280. If you are travelling, go early or go late.

Making a three-day weekend actually feel like one

The most common Labor Day complaint is that the weekend evaporates. A few things that help.

Decide Friday, not Saturday morning. The weekend has three days and about six good options. Groups that decide in advance do things; groups that decide on the day mostly drive around.

VTA light rail runs a holiday schedule on the Monday, which generally means Sunday frequencies. It serves downtown and the Winchester corridor, and it is the sensible way into downtown if you are going out.

Caltrain connects up the Peninsula and is the better option for Belmont or anything further north than Palo Alto. Holiday timetables apply, and the last trains back run earlier than you might assume.

Rideshare surges predictably on the Saturday and Sunday evenings. Downtown after 10 PM on a holiday weekend is the worst of it.

Walking downtown is genuinely pleasant in early September once the heat drops, and San Pedro Square through to SoFA covers most of what is open.

A note on the last weekend of summer

Labor Day marks the end of the summer stretch in a real way locally. Shoreline Amphitheatre's season winds down, the outdoor festival calendar thins out, and the evenings start closing in.

What replaces it, almost immediately, is the autumn events run — NFL kicks off the Wednesday after, the Sharks are back at SAP Center by the end of the month, and Winchester Fright Nights opens on the 18th. So the quiet stretch is genuinely short.
